6 Unique Benefits to Peritoneal Dialysis

Living Well on PD

When you choose peritoneal dialysis (PD) with DaVita, you're not just choosing a treatment; you're choosing the opportunity to live a better life on dialysis. That's because PD offers unique benefits that help optimize your quality of life:

1.  Freedom with support

PD is a home treatment—allowing you to schedule dialysis around your life (instead of your life around dialysis). Patients who choose PD can continue working, and have more time for activities and interests. But PD doesn't mean you're on your own. Your PD care team is available 24/7 and dedicated to ongoing support.

2.  Flexible diet

With PD, toxins are removed daily, allowing for a greater variety of food/drink options. This can not only make life more enjoyable, but it can make sticking to a kidney diet easier. Your dietitian will work with you on your specific nutritional needs.

3.  No needles for treatments

PD avoids the use of needles (to access veins) by using a soft, flexible catheter placed in the peritoneal cavity in the abdomen. This makes PD a good choice for children or those who dislike needles.

4.  Supplies at your door

PD equipment can be shipped right to your home—or in many cases, even your travel destination. Your equipment supplier and DaVita Guest Services collaborate so you have your supplies when and where you need them.

5.  Fewer trips to the center

Once you're trained on PD, you will likely only need to visit the dialysis center once or twice a month for routine checkups, as opposed to four hours a day, three days a week.

6.  Fewer side effects

PD's daily treatments more closely mimic your kidney's natural function, allowing for continuous, steady fluid balance and often fewer side effects such as muscle cramps and stomach discomfort.

Starting and living with PD

DaVita's patient training program customizes training to you. Then once you're on PD, your care team will provide ongoing education and regularly assess your PD suitability. You can also access DaVita.com educational articles, interactive tools and sign up for our home dialysis patient newsletter, LifeLines at Home for additional info and support. We're here for you—every step of the way.
